Brussels Climate Week hosts a side event on EU carbon dioxide removal policy and international credits on Wednesday 14 October, from 17:00 to 20:00 CET at Brasserie de la Senne.
BioFlux, a biochar carbon removal consultancy, and the Global South CDR Coalition will co-host "CDR beyond Europe", an official side event of Brussels Climate Week. The programme targets CDR developers, buyers, investors and policymakers as the EU shapes its CDR policy and its stance on international CDR credits.
The timing matters for the removals market. The European Commission is still developing its position on whether — and how — carbon removals generated outside the bloc can count toward EU climate commitments. That decision will define demand from EU buyers for projects in emerging markets.
What is on the programme?
Philippe Putman, Executive Director of the Global South CDR Coalition, opens with an introduction. Jop Weterings of DG CLIMA at the European Commission then joins a fireside chat on EU CDR policy and international CDR credits.
A panel follows, covering:
- lessons from five to ten years of carbon removal delivery;
- collaboration with emerging markets;
- opportunities for EU buyers and investors.
Panellists include Paul Préaux of BioFlux, Tom Mills of Mati Carbon, Wietse Vroom of Inspiratus, and DG CLIMA's Jop Weterings.
Who should attend?
The organisers pitch the event at the commercial and regulatory sides of the CDR value chain — developers building removal capacity, buyers weighing credit procurement, investors assessing project risk, and policymakers drafting the rules that will govern cross-border credit recognition.
Closing remarks come at 18:10. Drinks and networking run from 18:15 until 20:00 CET.
Registration is open at luma.com/h3nlceb1.
The milestone to watch: the Commission's forthcoming decisions on EU CDR policy and the treatment of international credits, which will determine how much EU demand flows to removal projects in the Global South.
