Waypoints

  1. Puro.earth published its CCS+ methodology suite and opened applications from DACCS suppliers.

  2. DACCS is the first activity type available under Puro.earth's CCS+ Program.

  3. Credits certified under the CCS+ Program will be issued as CCS+ CRC credits in the Puro Registry.

  4. The methodology suite includes modules on direct air capture, CO2 transport and CO2 storage in saline aquifers.

  5. The CCS+ methodology was developed jointly by technology providers, CO2 emitters, storage providers, academia and civil society.

Puro.earth has published its CCS+ methodology suite and opened applications for certification from direct air capture and geological storage (DACCS) suppliers, making DACCS the first activity type available under its CCS+ Program.

The Finnish registry operator confirmed that CO2 removal credits certified under the CCS+ Program will be issued as CCS+ CRC credits in the Puro Registry. Suppliers can now certify the full chain — capture, transport and storage — and receive credits for verified DACCS performance.

The CCS+ Program pulls carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methodologies developed by the CCS+ Initiative into Puro.earth's certification procedures. Its multi-program approach lets CDR projects certify under different recognized programs within the same infrastructure, rather than forcing projects through a single certification track.

Puro.earth laid out the move in a public statement: "With the publication of the CCS+ methodology suite, Direct Air Capture and Geological Storage (DACCS) becomes the first activity type available under the CCS+ Program at Puro.earth. This marks another step forward in our multi-program approach, integrating the CCS+ initiative's methodologies into Puro.earth's established certification infrastructure."

What does the published methodology contain?

The document suite covers more than a single capture pathway. It includes:

  • a CCS+ Carbon Capture and Storage Methodology;
  • a module on Direct Air Capture;
  • a module on CO2 Transport for CCS Projects;
  • a module on CO2 Storage in Saline Aquifers.

Two analytical tools accompany the methodology documents. One differentiates emission reductions from removals in CCS projects — a persistent accounting dispute in carbon markets, since stored captured CO2 does not always qualify as a removal. The other handles CO2 accounting for CCS projects that use shared infrastructure, where multiple emitters and operators feed into common transport and storage assets.

A Puro.earth CCS+ Program Annex closes the package. It sets out program-specific requirements that apply alongside the Puro.earth Certification Procedures and the CCS+ Initiative's own methodology documents.

The methodology itself was not drafted in-house. Puro.earth describes it as a joint global effort between technology and solution providers, CO2 emitters, CO2 transport and storage providers, academic members and civil society representatives. That breadth matters for credit buyers, because CCS+ credits face scrutiny over whether geological storage delivers durable removal.

How will verification work?

Puro.earth has also written specific requirements into its Certification Procedures to train Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs) that will validate and verify CCS+ Program activities. The quality of third-party verification, not the methodology text alone, will determine whether CCS+ CRC credits hold value in the corporate removal market.

Interested DACCS suppliers can read the program documents in Puro's library and apply through Puro.earth's existing certification process. The company has not publicly set a deadline for the first round of applications.

What does this change for carbon removal buyers and developers?

For DACCS developers, the announcement adds a second route to certified credits alongside other registry options, with issuance into an established registry. For buyers of engineered removals, it expands the supply of credits that carry documented accounting rules for the reduction-removal distinction and for shared-infrastructure CO2 flows.

The move follows other signs of expansion at Puro.earth, which has recently strengthened its certification and demand teams with key appointments and launched an environmental attributes registry that reaches beyond carbon removal.

The next milestone to watch is the first CCS+ CRC credit issued from a certified DACCS project in the Puro Registry — the point at which the published methodology faces its first live verification.
