Zefiro Backs Isometric's Orphaned Well Carbon Credit Protocol
Isometric's draft Orphaned Well Plugging Protocol, backed by Zefiro Methane, is in public consultation until November 14, 2026, ahead of a new methane credit revenue stream.

Waypoints
Isometric released the draft OWP Protocol on October 15, 2026; public consultation closes November 14, 2026.
The protocol requires direct on-site methane measurement, 20-year crediting, and permanence checks 12-18 months post-plugging.
Zefiro's core well-remediation business posted record fiscal 2026 revenue of $42.5 million, up 31.1% year over year.
Zefiro previously sold offsets under the American Carbon Registry to Mercuria Energy America and EDF Trading.
A draft carbon credit protocol covering orphaned oil and gas wells entered a 30-day public consultation on October 15, 2026, backed by financial and technical support from Zefiro Methane Corp., whose well-plugging service business generated a record $42.5 million in fiscal 2026. The consultation window closes on November 14, 2026.
Isometric, a carbon registry, published the draft Orphaned Well Plugging (OWP) Protocol for well-plugging operations across the United States and Canada. Zefiro, a North American environmental services firm, served as an external technical contributor alongside two other developers. The company supplied field data, land management expertise, and empirical operational input drawn from its own plugging activities.
The methodology targets non-CO2 greenhouse gas abatement from orphaned hydrocarbon wells that lack active operators and fall outside publicly funded remediation programs. Those wells form the material stream at issue: unmanaged methane leakage from sites nobody is legally bound to close.
What does the protocol require?
The draft sets measurement, reporting, and verification parameters designed for institutional buyers. It separates credits grounded in measured emissions from those based on modeled averages.
- Direct leakage measurement. Baseline emissions must be quantified through direct, on-site physical measurement of pre-plugging gas escape. Regional emission factor averages alone will not qualify a project.
- Crediting baseline and permanence. Offsets are projected over a 20-year crediting window using conservative decline curves. Projects must complete permanence checks 12 to 18 months after plugging, and a portion of generated credits stays in a buffer reserve until an independent party confirms secondary seal integrity.
- Additionality criteria. Eligible wells must be verifiably orphaned, unassigned to any active state or federal plugging schedule, and dependent on voluntary carbon market financing to achieve closure.
The framework answers a question buyers have asked since Zefiro's earlier offset transactions: how can methane reductions from orphaned wells be measured rather than estimated. Direct measurement, 20-year crediting, and mandatory post-plugging verification form the compliance backbone.
What does this change for Zefiro?
Finalization of the OWP Protocol would allow Zefiro to resume originating and commercializing methane abatement credits. The company previously completed offset transactions under the American Carbon Registry framework with buyers including Mercuria Energy America and EDF Trading.
The revenue stream would operate alongside, not instead of, Zefiro's core well-remediation service business. That business reported $42.5 million in revenue for fiscal 2026, ended June 30, 2026 — a 31.1% year-over-year increase and a company record.
Catherine Flax, Chief Executive Officer of Zefiro, framed the protocol as proof of market demand. "Zefiro helped demonstrate that institutional buyers will pay for methane reductions from plugged orphaned wells, and we are pleased to support Isometric's work on a protocol grounded in direct field measurement," Flax said.
She positioned carbon finance as a tool for wells that public programs will never reach. "For our shareholders, the opportunity is additive. Carbon finance gives us a way to plug orphaned wells that no public program is scheduled to address," Flax said.
What happens next
The decisive milestone is the close of the public consultation on November 14, 2026. Isometric must then finalize the methodology before Zefiro can resume credit origination under it. Until finalization, the offset stream remains an announced opportunity rather than built capacity; the $42.5 million service business carries the company's current operations.
Once the protocol is finalized, Zefiro's developers can register plugging projects that clear the additionality screen — verifiably orphaned wells outside public schedules — and route measured methane reductions to institutional buyers of the kind the company has already transacted with. The buffer-pool withholdings and the 12-to-18-month permanence checks will decide which credits reach the market and when.
