Renewable electricity consumption under Pflug reached nearly 95%.
Pflug served more than 5 years as CSO and remains until the end of the year.
Ingka Group, the retailer behind more than 85% of IKEA retail sales, has appointed Erika Intiso as Chief Sustainability Officer, effective November. She inherits a portfolio that includes Buyback & Resell, near-95% renewable electricity consumption, and an operations emissions cut exceeding 70% against a 2016 baseline.
Intiso replaces Karen Pflug, who will step down after more than five years in the role. Pflug stays until the end of the year to manage the transition.
The appointment puts a veteran operator in charge of the group's sustainability agenda. Intiso has spent more than 15 years inside the IKEA ecosystem, across retail, commercial development and business transformation. Her most recent post combined the CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer mandates for IKEA Czechia, Hungary and Slovakia — a dual role the group clearly valued. Her brief now covers integrating sustainability into business decisions and operations across the Ingka footprint.
What does the change mean for the material stream?
Pflug's tenure built the assets Intiso will now run. Under her watch, IKEA expanded its circular services, most notably Buyback & Resell, the takeback scheme that feeds used furniture back into resale channels rather than into waste streams. That programme, and the reverse-logistics capacity behind it, now falls to Intiso to scale.
Two operating numbers frame the inheritance. Renewable electricity consumption across the group reached nearly 95%. Absolute emissions from operations fell by more than 70% on a 2016 basis. Both are delivered results, not pledges, and both leave diminishing room for further headline gains — which sharpens the question of where the next reductions come from.
Ulrika Biesèrt, Group People, Sustainability and Communication Manager at Ingka Group, framed the appointment in operating terms. She said: "Sustainability is integrated into how we operate and develop our business. Erika brings extensive experience from across IKEA and a proven track record of advancing sustainability while delivering business results. As we take the next leap in integrating sustainability across our business, her leadership will be instrumental in driving further action."
How does the new CSO frame the job?
Intiso positioned sustainability as a growth lever rather than a compliance cost. She said: "Working across the IKEA value chain has proven to me that sustainability is a powerful engine for business growth. I know firsthand how vital it is to translate our ambitions into tangible actions that benefit our customers, co-workers, and communities."
Biesèrt also paid tribute to the outgoing CSO. She said: "I want to thank Karen for the important contribution she has made over the past five years. She has played a key role in shaping our sustainability work and leaves a strong foundation that we can continue to build on."
What happens next?
The handover runs on a defined timeline. Intiso takes the post in November. Pflug departs at year-end. That two-month overlap gives the group a single quarter to transfer ownership of the circular services pipeline and the emissions programme before the 2027 reporting cycle begins.
For observers of furniture takeback and resale markets, the signal is continuity. The group did not use the announcement to reset targets or restate baselines. Intiso arrives with a mandate to convert existing ambitions, in her own words, into tangible actions — and the first test will be whether Buyback & Resell volumes and the remaining 5% of non-renewable electricity move before her first year in post closes.
