Milkywire Locks In 3,661 Tonnes of Durable CDR Across Eight Suppliers

Salesforce-backed round covers 3,661 tonnes across DAC, ocean alkalinity and biomass storage developers, part of a $100 million durable CDR contracting pledge due by 2030.

Waypoints

  1. Milkywire finalized pre-purchases of 3,661 tonnes of durable CDR with eight suppliers, backed by Salesforce.

  2. Allocations: Carba 816 t, Alkamy Carbon 667 t, Brineworks 500 t, Cowboy Clean Fuels 500 t, Deep Sky 394 t, Sirona Technologies 390 t, Yama 263 t, PRONOE 131 t.

  3. The round forms part of Salesforce's pledge to contract $100 million in durable CDR by 2030 and follows purchases from 19 suppliers announced in January.

Milkywire has finalized pre-purchase agreements with eight durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) suppliers covering 3,661 tonnes, the latest tranche under Salesforce's commitment to contract $100 million in durable removals by 2030.

The round follows the Salesforce-backed purchases from 19 suppliers announced in January and directs capital across three removal pathways: direct air capture (DAC), ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and biomass storage.

The tonnage breakdown

Carba takes the largest allocation at 816 tonnes, followed by Alkamy Carbon at 667 tonnes. Brineworks and Cowboy Clean Fuels each secured 500 tonnes. Deep Sky accounts for 394 tonnes, Sirona Technologies 390 tonnes, Yama 263 tonnes and PRONOE 131 tonnes.

For the developers, the pre-purchases provide funding at a stage when buyers hold unusual leverage over which CDR approaches scale. Milkywire notes the selected suppliers are all executing first-of-a-kind deployments, testing geographies and technical steps that the wider field can learn from.

Four DAC developers, four engineering bets

Sirona Technologies, Yama, Brineworks and Deep Sky all operate DAC projects at different development stages. Sirona will build what the company describes as the world's first heat pump integration on a commercial DAC project, running an energy efficiency test expected to generate sector-wide insights.

Yama operates France's first DAC pilot and is now constructing a 365 t/yr demonstration facility. Brineworks pairs electrochemical DAC with green hydrogen co-production at its operations in the Netherlands. Deep Sky is developing a DAC-with-mineralization project in Canada.

OAE enters wastewater and desalination streams

The two OAE allocations went to PRONOE and Alkamy Carbon. PRONOE runs the EU's first land-based OAE system integrated with an industrial desalination plant. Alkamy Carbon operates within existing wastewater treatment infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, work the company says is contributing the first wastewater alkalinity dataset from tropical conditions.

Biomass storage via landfills and coal seams

The biomass storage tonnage is split between two divergent burial routes. Carba converts waste biomass into stable biocarbon and buries it in landfills. Cowboy Clean Fuels injects agricultural processing residues into unmineable coal seams, where native subsurface microbes convert the biomass into CO2 that permanently binds to the coal.

The deadline that matters

The commitments carry a fixed horizon: Salesforce has pledged $100 million in durable CDR contracts by 2030, and this 3,661-tonne round, together with the January purchases from 19 suppliers, marks progress against that target. How quickly the eight developers convert pre-purchase funding into commissioned capacity — Sirona's heat pump integration, Yama's 365 t/yr demonstration plant among them — will determine whether these tonnages translate into delivered removals.
