MUFG Extends Green Deposits to EU; Subaru Europe Signs as First Client
MUFG Bank rolled its Green Deposits product into the EU — its third jurisdiction after the US in 2021 and UK in 2023 — with Subaru Europe as the first client. The bank's framework covers renewable energy, clean transportation and circular-economy projects.

MUFG Bank has rolled its Green Deposits offering into the European Union, the third jurisdiction to host the corporate term-deposit product after launches in the United States in 2021 and the United Kingdom in 2023.
The EU product, operated through MUFG Bank (Europe) N.V., lets corporate clients place term deposits with the bank. MUFG then on-lends or allocates the funds to assets that meet its Green Deposit Framework, which the bank developed with Morningstar Sustainalytics.
The mechanism mirrors how corporate green bonds ringfence proceeds against eligible project portfolios. Depositors accept a defined term and rate, while the bank absorbs the matching of deposit proceeds to eligible assets. Sustainalytics' role is to verify the framework's eligibility list and the bank's annual allocation reporting.
What does the framework cover?
Ten categories of eligible activities sit inside the framework. They include renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean transportation, biodiversity, sustainable land-use and natural-resource management, sustainable water and wastewater management, green buildings, eco-efficient and circular-economy products, technologies and processes, and climate-change adaptation.
The circular-economy bucket is the direct point of contact for recyclers, secondary-materials processors, packaging-recovery operators and product-design firms that need bank-led project-finance capacity. MUFG did not disclose dedicated sub-allocations or ticket-size thresholds for the EU rollout and did not break out expected financing across the ten categories.
Who is using it first?
Subaru Europe became the first corporate to place funds through the new EU Green Deposits product. The automotive OEM's participation shows how the framework's clean-transportation category meets manufacturing-decarbonisation budgets at the customer level.
Mamoru Shibata, head of transaction banking EU/EEA at MUFG Bank (Europe) N.V., said: "Across the European market, sustainability continues to be an important priority for businesses, and we see strong value in extending this offering to the EU, providing clients with a solution that delivers both financial and non-financial value."
Keigo Ino, vice president at Subaru Europe, said: "We are pleased to be first to join an initiative that creates meaningful environmental benefits and contributes to a more sustainable future for our customers in Europe."
What changes for circular-economy borrowers?
For materials and recycling operators, the open question is whether the EU Green Deposits pool will finance circular-economy capex — sorting lines, recycled-content lines, mechanical or chemical recycling plants — at the scale banks have historically dedicated to renewable-energy lending. The framework's language leaves "eco-efficient and circular-economy products, technologies and processes" eligible without naming sub-sectors or thresholds.
The second-party opinion supplied by Sustainalytics will weigh on whether EU Green Deposits proceeds are recognisable as eligible sustainable-finance instruments under existing bank reporting standards. Clients reporting Scope 3 emissions and product-life-cycle metrics may treat the deposit proceeds as a treasury instrument that complements green-bond issuance.
The milestone to watch next: whether MUFG publishes a transaction-by-transaction EU Green Deposits allocation report, in line with the disclosure cadence applied after the US and UK rollouts, and whether circular-economy allocations are broken out separately.
